- Dengue is an illness that is caused by a Virus
- The Dengue Virus spreads through the bite of mosquitoes
- The mosquito that spreads the Dengue Virus is called Aedes Aegypti
- The symptoms of Dengue are:
- Fever
- Muscle Aches
- Joint Pain
- Rash
- Swollen Lymph Nodes
- Headache
- Abdominal Pain
- Vomiting
- Poor Appetite
- Bleeding Tendency
- Dengue Fever can cause Platelets (the cells responsible for blood clotting) to go down. This can cause a tendency to bleed from multiple body areas.
- There are Blood Tests available to diagnose Dengue Fever. These are:
- NS1 Antigen Test
- Dengue IgG & IgM Antibody Test
- There is no curative treatment for Dengue. Treatment for Dengue is mostly supportive – Fluids, Fever-control medicines and Pain-control
- The mosquito that spreads Dengue breeds in stagnant water, water tanks, water cans, buckets, flower vases, used tyres. Please ensure that you keep out such water reservoirs in your neighborhood.
- The mosquitoes that spread Dengue bite during the day-time, especially in the mornings & late afternoons / evenings. Be cautious during these times.
- Dengue can be prevented by effective mosquito-control measures:
- Mosquito Nets
- Mosquito Repellants
- Wearing clothing that covers the entire body like full sleeved-shirt & full-length pants
- Presently, there is no vaccine to prevent Dengue
- Not all Dengue infections cause death. So, there is no need to panic. In fact, most Dengue infections pass off a mild illness. Only a small proportion of Dengue illnesses become severe.
